What is a Movement Coordinator?

Similar to intimacy coordination, a movement coordinator works with the directing team and actors for all movement related elements that go beyond standard blocking - whether that’s capturing a specific quality to a character’s walk or more substantial movement. ‘Creature’ work, death scenes, dance/ party moments, demonic possession and beyond! For these creative elements, actors are being asked to move their bodies in ways that are unfamiliar or unnatural to them, and may risk injury if done unsafely. A movement coordinator provides physical exercises and various options to the requested movement. They can create formal blocking for the desired effect, and/or can rehearse with actors prior-to filming, helping them find improvised movements that support the story.

Movement coordinators are an invaluable asset to productions in today’s industry to ensure the balance of honoring the creative vision of production while respecting the actor’s safety and comfortability in the workplace.
